We mostly say and acknowledge that India is far behind its western counterparts in terms of growth, modernization, maturity of thoughts etc., etc., but in reality we seem to have a lot in common with each other. It’s just that we share very similar culture and festivals albeit with a different name and presentation. Let’s take Halloween 2015!, for instance. In India, in the month of October, we observe ‘shradh’ for the departed souls of the family. Performing tarpan in shradh is a way of remembering, thanking and honoring the ancestors for whatever they have given to the present generations. While we all get busy with the religious offering to the diety, preparing the shradh food (which consists of pura, kheer, panchdhari ke ladoo to name a few), have a panditiji (saint) perform puja and then later have the shradh food. While this is the culture of the east, the west is not far behind. They celebrate and observe the same festival in the name of ‘Allhalloween’ more commonly known as ‘Halloween’. For them it is a three day observance dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints, martyrs and all the other faithful departed believers. While the east does it in quiet a serious manner, the west does it with fun and party.
This is the time of the year where not only the children but also the elders of the house look forward to. For the children it involves getting dressed in Halloween costumes and going trick or treating with or without being accompanied by the elders while the elders usually have a party of their own later on. The Halloween trend has begun to catch up in India also and these days many families are seen hosting Halloween parties. Well one more reason to party ain’t bad, is it?
Now comes the main part of the Halloween, i.e., dressing up either as a scary character (that’s the ideal choice) or any other character which perhaps one loves and would like to imitate. Remember Joey (F.R.I.E.N.D.S) dressing up as Chandler in the Halloween episode?
Soul brings you some of the most preferred as well as unique list of characters you can dress up as, this Halloween 2015!.
Hands down the number one spot goes to the living dead commonly known as the Vampires. Dressing up in black and red, with slick hair, pointed fangs and an evil twinkle in the eye is an ideal look of a vampire.
Zombies – zombies are another hot favorite and one doesn’t have to do too much hard work. You can pick a type of zombie, pull out your old, worn out clothes and get as much creative you can in destroying it. Fake blood (tomato sauce?), dirt-muck, ashen face and dressed up in rags and tatters will make you look like a perfect zombie. You may also have to walk in the zombie manner which is pretty robotic and loony.
Pilot Tom Cruise in Top Gun – yes, this is not a scary one but is bound to make you fly away with the most brownie points from the opposite sex. Get yourself one of the pilot uniforms and add a pair of aviators and a helmet and you are ready to rock the irresistibly hot look.
Mask of Zorro – remember Catherine Zeta-(hot)-Jones? Who wouldn’t, huh! This look can work two-ways. One is the above mentioned character and the other is the Bandida (female version of a bandit) costume. You can go for black corset (can mostly be found in your wardrobe), a matching skirt (older the better so you strip cut the hem, a red sash, hat, black boots, a sword and the black zorro eye mask.
Princess Leia in Star Wars – there are two ways of dressing up as the most favored, popular and fantasy girl of many – Princess Leia of Star Wars. Either you can dress up in the all-white with the famous hairstyle (Heidi Blair Pratt was recently seen dressed up as the all-white princess leia this Halloween) or go for the iconic gold bikini look. Either way you will be an instant hit with the crowd especially, ahem, the muscular ones.
Well these were our top favorite picks for Halloween 2015.
SOUL tip- dressing up as a character and playing it is the most fun part of a Halloween party. So don’t be a party-pooper and make sure you do dress up as anybody but yourself.
